ITV and Coronation Street were praised for acting swiftly in disciplining actor Marc Anwar following racist tweets that targeted Indians – but some fans were still confused over the fact that Sharif Nazir was appearing in episodes following the news that the star would not be returning to filming.

However, others quickly sprang to the show’s defense, pointing out that it would have been nigh on impossible to re-edit two half hour episodes in just a day.

With episodes filmed up to eight weeks in advance, it was inevitable that Sharif would still need to be in the show in some capacity, especially given that he is currently in the middle of a big storyline which is taking centre stage this week.

In the wake of Marc’s sacking, a soap insider explained to Metro.co.uk that Coronation Street would be prioritising looking at how to minimise Sharif’s storyline but added that it would be impossible to scrap all of his scenes completely.

With the storyline due to shift focus to Yasmeen, Zeedan and Alya in coming weeks, it won’t be long before viewers will see the final scenes for the character but, until then, Sharif will make appearances on the show which have already been filmed to progress the plotline.

It is understood that Marc has not filmed any new scenes since he was confronted over the tweets, with his dismissal taking place with immediate effect.

However, some fans were still surprised to see him appear in Monday 26th September’s episodes and conveyed their bemusement on Twitter:

Most, though, understood Coronation Street’s predicament and accepted that dropping the scenes wouldn’t have been an option:

Marc recently recorded a video on YouTube to apologise for the tweets and the offence that they caused. His Twitter account went on to claim that the character would have been departing anyway when Marc’s contract was up in November.
